A Legacy of Love and Family
Albert Jerome White, Sr., affectionately known as "Whitey" and "Al," was born in Sumter, South Carolina, on May 5, 1953, and departed this earthly life on March 10, 2025. He lived a life full of purpose, love, and unwavering commitment to his family, friends, and the passions that shaped him.
In his early childhood, Albert dedicated his life to Christ and was baptized in Sumter, South Carolina. He was educated in the Sumter County school system, where he developed his love for basketball and other sports. As a proud member of the Sumter High School Gamecocks, he played a pivotal role in his team’s success during his junior and senior years. His exceptional talent as both an academic scholar and athlete on the court earned him multiple scholarship offers, but it was Claflin College in Orangeburg, South Carolina, that became his home, providing him with a full basketball scholarship and a lifelong connection to the institution he so deeply cherished.
Graduating in 1975 with a Bachelor of Science in Physical Education, Albert embraced the essence of "Claflin Confidence"—a mindset he would instill in his children throughout their lives. Known on campus as "Whitey," he formed bonds that would last a lifetime, returning faithfully each November for Claflin’s Homecoming, always making sure to reunite with his dear friend, Stonie.
Following his graduation, Albert moved to New York, where he would spend the remainder of his life. In 1979, he married the love of his life, the former Charlotte Williams, whom he endearingly called "Big C". There, he effortlessly formed lasting friendships, bonding over baseball, music, and shared southern roots. His career spanned several managerial roles in major franchises such as Howard Johnson, Stewart’s, and ultimately, Xerox, where he dedicated years of service until his retirement.
A man of tall stature with a heart just as big, Whitey was a constant presence on the sidelines and fields, cheering on his children with pride. His encouragement was always clear: "Show your White pride!" He never missed an opportunity to uplift them, boasting of their accomplishments and pushing them to exceed expectations. Though not a man of many words, Al never met a stranger and never hesitated to extend a helping hand.
Albert’s legacy in athletics extended beyond playing; he was a celebrated official in high school and flag football leagues across Sullivan, Orange, and Ulster Counties. In 2014, he was honored with induction into the Claflin University Athletic Hall of Fame for his outstanding collegiate basketball career, where he served as team captain, leading scorer, and vice president from 1973-1975.
Sports were not just a pastime but a passion, and none held his heart quite like football—especially his beloved Pittsburgh Steelers. On game days, Whitey could be found proudly wearing his Steelers jersey, his “Terrible Towel” humorously doubling as an ashtray. His knowledge of sports history was unmatched—he could recall championship winners, MVPs, and game stats with precision, making every conversation an engaging one.
Albert White, Sr. was a devoted husband, father, "Big Daddy," brother-in-law, uncle, cousin, and friend. His legacy will forever be carried on by his loving wife, Mrs. Charlotte E. White of South Fallsburg, New York; his remarkable children, Ms. Shanna C. White of Orangeburg, South Carolina, Mr. Albert J. White, II (Allison) of Parksville, New York, Mr. Wesley C. White (Josie) of Loch Sheldrake, New York, and Mr. Lionel P. White (Janine) of Fallsburg, New York—who he always said was all the family he needed.
Affectionately known as "Big Daddy," Albert adored his ten grandchildren: Mr. Donovan White of Orangeburg, SC; Jordan White of Parksville, NY; Dakoda Harris of Orangeburg, SC; Charlotte Ann Marie White of Parksville, NY; Lennox White of Fallsburg, NY; Julie Mercado of Loch Sheldrake, NY; Gianna Lewis of Liberty, NY; Madison Morales of Shohola, PA; Makayla Morales of Parksville, NY; and Mariah Carter of Shohola, PA. He will also be missed by a host of beloved nieces, nephews, cousins, brothers- and sisters-in-law, extended relatives, and dear friends.
A visitation will be held on Monday, March 17, 2025 from 9:30 AM to 11:30 AM at First Baptist Church, 5258 Main Street, South Fallsburg, NY. A funeral service will follow immediately at the church.
Albert Jerome White, Sr., leaves behind a legacy of love, perseverance, and excellence. His impact will be felt for generations to come, and though he has departed this life, his spirit will forever remain in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.
