Obituary

Charles N. Johnston, 75, of Shandelee/Livingston Manor passed away peacefully at home, on Saturday, January 17, 2026, surrounded by his family.

He was born on December 22, 1950, to C. Nelson Johnston and Agnes Hresko Johnston in Paterson, New Jersey.

Raised in Roscoe, Charles attended St. Aloysius School and graduated from Roscoe Central School. Charles was a proud graduate of the University of Notre Dame. He went on to attend Cleveland State Law School for 1 year before returning home to join the family business, Johnston & Rhodes Bluestone Company in East Branch, New York. In 2000, he started his own business, Johnston Forest Products, Inc where he continued to run a sawmill and manage his own as well as other hardwood timber properties, until his retirement.

Charles previously served as Chairman of the Town of Rockland Planning Board, a member of NYSFA and other professional organizations.

An avid golfer, Charles was the happiest being on any golf course or in the woods cruising timber.

Charles was predeceased by his parents and brother, James. He is survived by his wife of 32 years, Cynthia; his son, James; sisters-in-law, Linda Goldstein and her husband Greg and Debra Briggs and her partner Tom Morse; many cousins, nieces and nephews and a special lifetime friend, Douglas K. Bury.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks for donations to be made to the Livingston Manor Volunteer Ambulance Corps or Ride to Survive/Sullivan County.

Visitation will take place on Friday, January 23, 2026, from 4:00 p.m. -7:00 p.m., at Colonial Memorial Funeral Home, 29 Pearl Street, Livingston Manor, New York.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered by Fr. Edward Bader, on Saturday, January 24, 2026, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Aloysius Church, 22 Church Street, Livingston Manor, New York. Burial will follow in St. Aloysius Cemetery, Livingston Manor, New York.
