Captain Danial Allan Smith, US Forest Service, Retired, passed away on March 3, 2026, at Garnet Health Medical Center in Harris, New York. He was 75 years old.
Danial was born on October 10, 1950, in Stockton, California, to Winfield B. Smith and Mary Patricia Highland.
Danial spent his career serving with the U.S. Forest Service as a Wildland Firefighter in California. At just 23 years old, he became the youngest Captain in the service. As a highly decorated retired Fire Captain, he went on and became an instructor at Firestorm, training and mentoring other firefighters.
Danial was a quiet, humble man and a talented craftsman. He enjoyed fishing, mountain biking, and spending time outdoors. Above all, he loved his family.
He is survived by his loving and devoted wife, Bonnie Smith; his children, Devin Smith, Stephanie Norris, and Jacob Smith; his stepchildren, Danielle, David, and Justin. He was the biological grandfather to Taylor (deceased), Quinn, and Bryce Smith; And was affectionately known as "Papa Dan" by Josephine, James, and Henry, as well as Madison and Denise.
He was predeceased by his parents, Winfield B. Smith and Mary Patricia Highland, and by his grandson, Taylor.
A memorial visitation will be held on Saturday, March 14, 2026, from 2 to 4 pm at Colonial-Ramsay Funeral Home, 3534 State Route 55, Kauneonga Lake, New York 12749. A Memorial service will begin at 4 p.m. at the funeral home. Firematic services will also be conducted.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Danial's memory to the Tunnel 2 Towers Foundation in support of 9/11 responders.
Danial will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by all who knew him.
