Ellen Swandiak, of New York City, passed away on July 13, 2025, at the age of 66. She was born in the Bronx on February 16, 1959 to Steve and Emily Swandiak. Ellen spent most of her life in Manhattan, where she was a pioneering graphic designer, launching numerous magazines and designing books. She was the founder and editor in chief of HOBNOB, an online lifestyle magazine, and co-author of The 500 Hidden Secrets of New York City, a travel guide series.
Ellen graduated from Parsons School of Design and was known for her sharp eye for design, her love of entertaining, and her deep knowledge of New York’s hidden culinary and cultural gems. She will be remembered for her creativity, warmth, and passion for celebrating life’s details.
She is survived by her brother Joe Swandiak and was predeceased by her parents and her brother Steven Swandiak.
Visitation will be held from 1 to 2pm on Saturday, July 19th at Colonial Memorial Funeral Home, 396 State Route 52, Woodbourne, NY 12788. A graveside service will follow at Fantinekill Cemetery, Route 209, Ellenville, NY.
