Obituary

James Thomas Van Steenburg, age 64, of Lew Beach, NY, passed away on June 26, 2026. James was born on April 7th, 1962, in Florissant, MO, to the late George and Carol Van Steenburg.

James and his five siblings were part of a family that relocated frequently across the United States. He graduated from Honeoye Falls-Lima High School in 1980. He was the father of two daughters and the uncle of nine nieces and nephews. James loved his life in Lew Beach, where he spent countless hours in his beloved "coop," a place where family and friends always knew they could find him. His love of hunting and the outdoors led to lifelong friendships and many treasured memories. He worked primarily in the masonry field, including various other positions throughout his career. Most of his professional life was dedicated to Barnhart Services, a family-owned business in the Beaverkill Valley.

James is predeceased by his parents, George and Carol VanSteenburg. James is survived by his beloved life partner, Maria Schick; two daughters, Katrina Van Steenburg of Fairport, NY, and Brittnay Sostre of San Antonio, TX. Five siblings: his sister, Patricia Allison, of St. Charles, MO, and his brothers, George Van Steenburg of Panama City, FL, and David Van Steenburg of San Antonio, TX. Michael Van Steenburg of Lew Beach, NY, and Robert Van Steenburg of Mendon, NY. He also leaves behind nine nieces and nephews, numerous cousins, and many dear friends.

Visitation will be held on September 11, 2026, from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Colonial Bryant Funeral Home in Livingston Manor, NY. A graveside service will take place on Saturday, September 12, 2026, at 12 p.m. in Lew Beach, NY. Following the service, family and friends are invited to a celebration of his life; further details will be provided. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Kidney Foundation (AFK) in memory of James Van Steenburg.
