Obituary

Larry McCall Sr was born in Brooklyn, NY on September 9, 1955, to Fred McCall and Lucy Mae McCall. He attended P.S. 59 and I.S. 33, also in Brooklyn, NY. He attended Eastern District H.S. followed by a stint in Job Corp where he was trained in the construction trade. Although Larry did not graduate from high school, he spent all of his life pursuing knowledge. Larry's greatest education occurred when he entered Phoenix House. Larry credited Phoenix house with making him into the man we all knew and loved. He said Phoenix House saved his life. He made lifelong friends there.

Phoenix House also helped make Larry worthy of the woman who would one day become the love of his life, Barbara Westmoreland. Auntie Barbara to most of us. Larry met Barbara in Brooklyn in 1973. The shy church girl meets the charming rascal. In later years they developed a friendship that blossomed into love, and the pair were married Nov, 3, 1981. They welcomed 4 children, Promise, Joy, Larry Jr and Corey. They raised their family in the Seventh Day Adventist faith, honoring the Sabbath, sundown Friday to sundown Saturday. They worshiped at South Brooklyn Seventh Day Adventist church for many years. Barbara and Larry moved their family from Brooklyn to Monticello, NY in the year 2000 to give them a better life away from the chaos of the inner city. In addition to raising their 4 children, they raised, nurtured, counseled, housed and loved a multitude of nieces, nephews, neighbor's children and children from the church. All of this on a construction worker's salary and an 8th grade education.

Larry realized his lifelong dream of learning to read when he attended Literacy Volunteers in Monticello. The 1st novel he ever read was "Men Cry in the Dark", by Michael Baisden. He openly cried with joy and a huge sense of accomplishment when he completed that novel. Larry spent years encouraging children to read, to take their education seriously, going so far as to offer children $10 for every "A' they received on their report card. You had better believe those children showed up with smiles knowing that Mr. Larry would stay true to his word. Some children received as much as $50 per report card. He threw them pizza parties when they helped him clean up the neighborhood, took some of them fishing, and was always ready to lend an ear or a shoulder to cry on. He knew that childhood trauma leads to troubled adults. He really and truly cared.

Larry was employed by Hallen construction where he was known as The Hammer, for carrying 2 hammers on his tool belt and being tough as nails. Unfortunately, his career as a construction worker was tragically cut short when he was hurt on the job. A hit and run that changed his life and forced him into early retirement. Larry spent his remaining years in service to the community as well as to his family.

Unfortunately, a diagnosis of progressive supra- nuclear palsy also known as PSP, with dementia would go on to slowly rob Larry of his memories, his mobility and his dynamic personality. Larry departed this world on Saturday April 11, 2026, at the age of 70. Larry was preceded in death by his father, Fred McCall, his mother Lucy Mae Gordon, stepfather Golie Gordon, brothers Fred Lee, Vander and Mackie McCall, and brother Ben Burnside, and his sisters Cynthia McCall and Carol Patterson.

Larry is survived by his loving wife Barbara McCall, his 4 children, Promise McCall, Joy McCall, Larry McCall Jr, and Corey McCall Sr. His son in law Fabian Clough Sr, daughters in law Shannelle Fields and Amber Haddon. Grandchildren-Nazjaa, Fabian Jr, Demetrius, Jadarius and Jazir Clough. Elijah and Lailah McCall. Alyssa, Corey Jr and Amelia McCall. Kenejah Calhoun And Xiara Omana.

Larry is also survived by his sisters Rosa Mae Pressly, Rosemary Jacox, Diane McCall, Willie McCall, and Patricia McCall, and brother Johnny McCall. Stepbrothers Gregory Gordon, Germany Gordon Sr, Graham Gordon Sr and Gabriel Gordon.

In addition, Larry leaves behind a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends who all loved and cherished him. Some people knew him as Larry Love. Such an appropriate tag because when you were with him, you felt love, you saw love, and you knew you were loved. Larry, you left your mark on this world, and you will truly be missed.
