Obituary

Laura Dobell, 71, passed away peacefully on July 15, 2026, leaving behind a legacy of kindness, generosity, and unconditional love. Laura was the kind of person who would go out of her way to help anyone in need. Her compassionate heart, warm spirit, and willingness to put others before herself touched the lives of all who knew her.

Laura had a deep appreciation for life's simple joys. She loved the color purple-not just as a favorite color, but as something that truly reflected her personality and surrounded her in countless ways. Those who knew her understood that purple wasn't just a preference; it was simply "Laura." She was an avid birdwatcher who found happiness in caring for the birds, even if the local bears had a habit of helping themselves to her bird feeders. She also enjoyed listening to classic country music, especially the timeless voices of Conway Twitty and Patsy Cline, whose songs often filled her home.

Since 2018, Laura was a proud social member of the Loch Sheldrake Fire Department, where she cherished the friendships and sense of community she found there.

Laura was predeceased by her beloved husband, Gene Dobell; her parents, Leon and Ester Balanovich; and her brother, Leon Balanovich.

She is lovingly remembered by her daughters, Valerie Dobell (Chris) and Jessica Contrys (Brian); her stepdaughter, Lisa Keen; her cherished grandchildren, James, Gene, Cathleen, and Laura; her siblings, Dave Balanovich, Denise Balanovich, and Lynn Bivins; and her dear friend, Victoria Giordano. She also leaves behind many extended family members and friends who will forever remember her generous heart, gentle nature, and unwavering love.

Laura's kindness will continue to live on in the countless lives she touched. Whether through a helping hand, a thoughtful gesture, a shared laugh, or simply the comfort of her presence, she made the world a brighter place. She will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing her.

A graveside memorial service celebrating Laura's life will be held on Friday, July 31, 2026, at 12:00 p.m. at Sullivan County Veterans Cemetery. Family and friends are invited to attend as they gather to honor her memory and celebrate a life filled with love, compassion, and grace.
