Lavan Waymond Young

On Tuesday, May 6, 2025 our beloved LaVan Waymond Young entered into his eternal rest at home.
He was born January 27, 1928 in the Lynn Inn Hospital, New York City, New York, to the late Lavan and Marie Chamberlain Young. LaVan accepted the Lord Jesus Christ as his personal savior at the age of 12 and joined Metropolitan C.M.E. Church, New York City. Je was educated in the N.Y.C. school system, after graduation he furthered his studies at Fordham University and Fashion Institute of Technology, N.Y. he was drafted into the US Armed Forces and served overseas. On his return home he moved to Jamaica, Long Island, NY at which time he joined St. John’s Baptist Church, while serving there he taught Sunday school, served as Sunday school superintendent for twenty years, served as church treasurer for thirty-five years, organized a chapter in the United Boy’s Brigade of America and Girls Units Incorporated, and later became the New York State commander of the Youth Group. He was employed at the Bulova Systems and Instruments Division in Valley Stream, NY. He was promoted to Manager of the Inspection, Test and Metrology Laboratory covering all government classified and unclassified contracts for all their New York facilities and held that post until he retired. During this time LaVan met Ella Bradford and was united in Holy Matrimony at St. John’s Baptist Church. After retiring from Bulova, LaVan and Ella moved to Camp Dunn, Phillipsport, NY. They later joined Shiloh Baptist Church, Ellenville, NY after a while he became the Shiloh’s Youth Director from 1994 to 2004 and planned many all year-round trips for the youth. He taught Sunday school, and helped organize the Shiloh Shut-in Crusaders which visits the sick and shut-in every Tuesday. He called himself the “Shiloh Truant Officer” checking on Shiloh members that missed coming to Sunday church service. LaVan loved working with the senior adults and planned monthly trips all year round, LaVan was ordained Deacon on June 25, 1995.
He leaves behind to cherish his precious memories, his devoted wife Ella Young, many nephews, nieces, cousins and friends.
His light shone before men that we saw his good works and glorify our Father which is in Heaven. They that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength, they shall mount up with wings as eagles, they shall fun and not get weary, they shall walk and not faint, Isaiah 40:31.
A visitation will be held at Shiloh Baptist Church, 60 Berme Rd, Ellenville, NY 12428 on Saturday, May 17th from 10am to 11am. A funeral service will follow immediately at the church. Burial to follow at Sullivan County Veterans Cemetery, Sunset Lake Rd, Liberty, NY with full military honors.
