Lena
Earl Witherspoon
April 11, 2026
Lena Earl Witherspoon, a lifelong resident of Monticello, NY, entered eternal rest on April 11, 2026, at the age of 84. She passed peacefully at home, surrounded by her loving children.
Born on July 9, 1941, in Linden, AL, to the late Taylor and Pearle Tate, Lena later moved to Uniontown, AL, where she met her beloved husband, the late Clarence Witherspoon Jr. At 18, she relocated to Monticello, NY, where they married and raised their family.
Lena was a devoted member of King's Chapel Church in the Apostolic Pentecostal faith, where she served with joy. She found happiness in cooking for others, gathering in fellowship, and encouraging those around her. Her life was rooted in prayer, and no matter what she faced, her faith in God never wavered. She had a giving spirit, a warm heart, and a quiet strength that touched everyone who knew her.
She was preceded in death by her husband; her siblings Annie Pearl Turner, Reves Benders, Frances Green, Velma Tate, Charlie Tate, and Taylor Tate Jr.; her beloved nephew Charles Reeves; and her dear cousin Ernestine Nettles.
She leaves to cherish her memory, her children: Clarence Witherspoon III, Debra (Ernest) Benders, and Steven Witherspoon, all of Monticello, NY, her cherished grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Her youngest sibling, James West of Birmingham, AL; her dear cousin Gloria Jean Huston of Buffalo, NY; and a host of loving nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. Lena will be remembered for her strength, her faith, and her unconditional love. Rest in peace in the presence of the Lord.
Visitation will be on Friday, April 17, 2026, at Kings Chapel Church, 15 Spring St., Monticello NY, from 6-8:00pm., and on Saturday, April 18, 2026, from 9-10:00am with a funeral service beginning at 10am. Interment will follow at Rock Ridge Cemetery.
