View Tribute Book Leon Dexter Dixon Jr., son of Leon Dixon and Myrtle Weinglass Dixon, was born on November 7th, 1947, in New York City. His family moved from The Bronx to the Canarsie neighborhood in Brooklyn in New York City when he was five years old. Leon received his education at Public School No. 242, John Wilson Junior High School, and Westinghouse Vocational and Technical High School in Brooklyn. While in high school, he studied and received his diploma in Furniture and Cabinet Making. Leon was also skilled in drawing and art, competing in an art contest while in high school and claiming the first-place prize. Because of his artistic skill, he was offered a scholarship to a private art school but chose to remain at Westinghouse.  Leon was a giving and charitable spirit and, during the summers, served as a lifeguard at Betsy Head Park Outdoor Pool in the Brownsville section of Brooklyn. Leon was also a member of the Canarsie Sea Cadets, a neighborhood Drum and Bugle Corp for youth. Leon played bass drum in the Sea Cadets Marching Band and was an illustrious Canarsie Sea Cadets Rifle Drill Team member. The Canarsie Sea Cadets performed annually in parades throughout Brooklyn. You could have found Leon at the neighborhood parks and community centers throughout the year, playing basketball, softball, handball, and crafts. He loved playing checkers and cards with his dad and being with friends and family at cookouts and block parties. Leon moved to Sullivan County in the ’80s and was joined in holy matrimony to his devoted wife Veronica Carter on December 20th, 1997. Leon loved to sing and was a member of the Monticello-based singing group “Natural High,” where he teamed up with Ishan Armstrong and Henry Belser to produce their first CD titled “Natural High Plus One.” They would frequently perform throughout Sullivan County. Leon worked at the Concord as a supervisor, Mountain Dairy as a truck driver, Monticello Racetrack as a maintenance man and truck driver, and ARC as a direct support professional.On Monday, December 20th, 2021, Leon passed peacefully while asleep at Achieve Rehab & Nursing. He was 74. Leon was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. Leon was held in high esteem and respected for his integrity, sincerity, and loving manner by all who knew him. Leon will be sorely missed by his wife, Veronica; three daughters, Nara, Victoria, and Tyissha; six grandchildren Corey, Mehki, Jaydin, Kameron, Zoe, and Zori; four siblings, Carol Anderson and her husband Charles Anderson, brother Philip-Mansur Abdur-Rahman and his wife Ruby Stanfield Rahman, Roger Dixon and wife Regina Dixon, and Melanie Hakikah Dixon. His mother and father predeceased him, Myrtle and Leon Dixon, sister Paula Dixon, and brother Peter Dixon. In addition, Leon will be missed by a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. We all loved Leon, but the Almighty Creator Loved him Best.
