Dr. Paul M. D’Amico of Livingston Manor, NY passed away on Tuesday December 29, 2015. He was 81.
The son of the late John D’Amico and Lucy (Lorino) D’Amico, he was born on July 20, 1934 in Livingston Manor. Dr. D’Amico had a life-long devotion to helping others through his counsel.
After earning his pre-med degree from Georgetown University, he obtained a masters degree from Columbia University and then attained his medical degree from Chicago College of Osteopathy. While fulfilling his medical residency in Muskegon MI, he met his beloved wife, Barbara (Christian) D’Amico, of more than 45 years who predeceased him in 2007. They then returned to Livingston Manor to establish his medical practice and raise a family. In addition to serving the community as a general practitioner, he became a pioneer in the field of drug and alcohol addictions, helping countless patients arrest their addictions and go on to fulfilling lives. He created and directed detox programs at multiple hospitals, lectured and wrote profusely on the subject, and published two books in this field.
Dr. D’Amico served as President of the Livingston Manor School Board, President of the local Italian-American club, was a member of the local Lion’s Club, and was active in several other groups that spanned his diverse interests. He was an avid outdoorsman who loved fishing, hunting and hiking. He loved to be surrounded by family and, above all, Dr. D’Amico was deeply religious and devoted to his traditional Catholic roots.
In his last years, Dr. D’Amico resided in central Maine to be close to family. He suffered for many years and ultimately succumbed to Parkinson’s Disease.
Dr. D’Amico is survived by his children: John F. D’Amico and his wife Katherine of Belgrade ME, Paul M. D’Amico and his wife Christine of Greenwich CT, Mark A. D’Amico and his wife Carmen of East Meredith NY, Lisa Michalowsky and her husband Esteban of Lew Beach NY, and Sara Jakob and her husband Claus of Germany. He is also survived by his sister Mary Ann Finkelstein, many grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be held on Sunday, January 3 from 3:00-6:00pm at the Colonial-Bryant Funeral Home in Livingston Manor. A funeral service will be held on Monday, January 4 at 10:00am at the funeral home followed by a Christian burial at the Lew Beach Cemetery. Father Joseph Collins will officiate.
