Robert Akerley of Grahamsville, NY, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, June 10, 2026, on his 80th birthday.

Born on June 10, 1946, in Liberty, NY, Robert was the son of the late Herbert Akerley Sr. and Maxine Donaldson Akerley. He proudly served his country in the United States Army from 1966 to 1968 before beginning a long and dedicated career as a Correction Officer at Eastern Correctional Facility, from which he retired.

Robert was a lifelong outdoorsman and a proud member of the Grahamsville Rod and Gun Club. He found great joy in hunting and fishing, especially when sharing those experiences with his grandsons. Whether tending his garden, raising farm animals, or "working" outdoors, he was always happiest when keeping busy.

Robert enjoyed listening to country music, particularly the songs by George Jones. He loved attending auctions of all kinds, from livestock sales to knick-knack auctions, and was well known for never throwing anything away, always finding a special use for every item he brought home. He had a sweet tooth that was impossible to miss and could often be found enjoying cakes, cupcakes, and other sweet treats.

Those who knew Robert will remember him as a stubborn but loving man with a great sense of humor. He was a jokester who enjoyed making others laugh. One of his favorite annual traditions was attending the Delaware County Fair in Walton.

Robert is survived by his loving daughters, Robin (Thomas) DeMarmels, Denice (Robert Lewis) Smith; Jessie Powell, and Donald Akerley; many cherished grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren; his sister, Maxine Buck; and his sisters-in-law, Hazel Akerley and Kathleen Akerley .

In addition to his parents, Robert was predeceased by his siblings, Harold Akerley, Kenneth Akerley, Herbert Akerley Jr., Dennis Akerley, Helen Johnstone, Lulubelle Glore, and Ralph Akerley.

Visitation will be on Saturday, June 13, 2026, from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. at Colonial Memorial Funeral Home, 396 State Route 52, Woodbourne, NY. Funeral services will be held at the funeral home at 2:30 p.m.
