Russell Stahl, a beloved educator, mentor, husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, passed away peacefully on September 6, 2026, at the age of 87.

Russell devoted 36 years of his life to teaching, inspiring generations of students through his passion for science and education. A renowned teacher of both physics and chemistry, he was known for his ability to make challenging subjects understandable, engaging, and meaningful to his students. He concluded his distinguished career as Head of the Science Department in the Liberty Central School District, where his influence extended far beyond the classroom.

His commitment to education continued through his work teaching technology skills at the Sullivan County Teachers' Center. Russell was also the recipient of numerous national science foundation grants, including grants and academic opportunities from Yale University, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI), Penn State University, and the University of California, Berkeley. These accomplishments reflected not only his exceptional knowledge and dedication to learning, but also his lifelong belief in the importance of education and the pursuit of knowledge.

While Russell took great pride in his professional accomplishments, his greatest joy was his family. He leaves behind his beloved wife, Valerie; his sons, Martin and Michael; his sister Margerie; his nephew, Daniel; his niece, Holly; his five grandchildren, Adam, Tegan, Molly, Megan, and Michaela; and his four great-grandchildren, Bryce, Brayden, Elijah, and Emma.

Russell will be remembered for his intellect, dedication, generosity, and passion for teaching. Most of all, he will be remembered as a devoted family man whose influence touched countless students, colleagues, friends, and loved ones. The lessons he taught in the classroom were important, but the example he set through a life devoted to learning, family, and service will remain his enduring legacy.

His memory will live on in the many lives he touched and in the generations of his family who loved him dearly.
