Susan M. “Sue” Deighton, 59, of Cochecton, New York, passed away peacefully on July 30, 2025, at Garnet Health Medical Center. Born on July 25, 1966, in Liberty, she was the beloved daughter of late George Wagner and Elizabeth Haiss. She lived a life filled with love and laughter.
Susan was a proud graduate of Liberty High School and began her career at the age of 22 with Woodbourne Correctional Facility, where she worked as a dedicated keyboard specialist. After 35 years of service, she retired on April 30, 2024.
Susan had a vibrant and outgoing personality that lit up every room she entered. She was a nurturing soul who always looked for the good in others and never hesitated to speak her mind—often with a sense of humor that could brighten even the darkest day. She had a love for life that was infectious and was happiest when surrounded by family and friends.
She enjoyed camping, attending truck shows, fishing, crocheting, cooking, and traveling. A true social butterfly, she especially cherished her time at hunting camp and never missed a Wednesday night friends' dinner. Sue also found great joy in feeding deer and watching hummingbirds in her yard. She loved collecting recipes and had a unique talent for turning anything into something special.
Susan and her beloved husband, Howard Deighton, shared over 30 wonderful years together. They were true partners in every sense, going everywhere and doing everything together. They were looking forward to celebrating their 30th wedding anniversary this August.
Susan was known for her honest, heartfelt nature, and her favorite words to those she cared about were always: “Love you — no BS.” That simple phrase captured her loyalty, her love, and her no-nonsense spirit that all who knew her will never forget.
She is survived by her loving husband, Howard; her son, Hunter Deighton, and his girlfriend LiaMae Zenninger; her sister, Trish Barber, and husband Steve; her nieces and nephews: Clayton Barber and his wife Courtney, Lillian Burns and her husband Brian, and Fiona Barber; as well as many aunts, uncles, cousins, and dear friends.
Susan was predeceased by her parents and her grandparents, Anna and Charles Haiss.
A memorial service celebrating Susan’s life will be held on Tuesday, August 12th from 4:00 to 7:00 PM at Colonial Ramsay Funeral Home, 3534 Route 55 Kauneonga Lake, NY 12749.
