William T. "Sonny" Backer

Monticello, NY

William "Sonny" Backer passed away on Sunday January 24, 2016 at Catskill Regional Medical Center-Skilled Nursing Unit. He was 85. The son of the late Karl and Emilie Manz Backer, he was born on November 10, 1930 in Monticello, NY. He was the widower of Elizabeth "Betty" Backer who passed away in 2006.

Sonny retired from the Meter Department of NYSE&G in Liberty, NY. He was a US Army Veteran, serving during the Korean War and received a Bronze Star. He was a member of the VFW Bailey-Richman Post # 9588 of Monticello and was an avid lover of horses.

He is survived by his son, Keith Backer and his wife Doreen of Pleasant Valley, NY; his daughter, Lorri Logan of Kerhonkson, NY; granddaughters, Caitlin and Erin; nieces, Joan Reuss, Pat Galligan, Linda Kozachuk; nephews, John Murran, Fred Starr, Douglas Starr and Clint Starr and many great-nieces and great-nephews. He was predeceased by a brother, Fritz Backer and sisters, Emily Starr and Charlotte Murran.

Friends may call on Wednesday, January 27 from 7 - 9 PM at Ramsay's Funeral Home, 55 St. John St. Monticello. VFW services will be held at 7:30 PM. Funeral services will be on Thursday, January 28 at 11 AM at Ramsay's Funeral Home. Burial with Military Honors will follow at Rock Ridge Cemetery in Monticello, NY where Sonny will be interred with his wife, Elizabeth.
